discu record

A track and field school record that stood since 1999 in the discus was broken by three girls for Bridgewater-Raritan High School on Saturday, April 5.

During the Somerset County Track and Field Reays, Emily Leppert, who posted a throw of 104’ 8”, Madison D’Elia, who hit for a distance of 103’ 0”, and Madeline Corbitt, who scored a distance of 100’ 8”, combined for a total of 308’ 4” to win the Somerset County championship in the discuss relay event at Ridge High School.

The girls, who are coached in the event by James Luginsland and by Dr. Adam Pyle, the head coach of Bridgewater-Raritan, teamed up to break the previous school record of 261’ 11” that was established in 1999.

Coaches Luginsland and Pyle each shared their feelings about this memorable showing.

“Today (April 5) is a great day for Bridgewater-Raritan girls’ track and field,” Coach Luginsland said. “What the discus relay accomplished is extraordinary, each of them throwing over 100ft, together winning the Somerset County for the first time in over 30 years and breaking the school record by almost 47 feet.”

He continued with his assessment.

“The names Leppert, D'Elia and Corbitt will be synonymous with Bridgewater-Raritn girls’ dscus throwing for years and decades to come! I am so proud to be their coach!"

Dr. Pyle provided his comments on this historical performance.

“The outcome of this past Saturday's performance is a lesson in resiliency. We need the bad to appreciate the good. We need to fail to value our success. Leppert, D’Elia, and Corbitt proved to themselves and demonstrated that they have grit."

The veteran coach added:

“I can speak on behalf of our program when I say we are very proud of them and this accomplishment.”
