Hillside assembly

A history lesson was presented by two performers at the Hillside Intermediate School on Wednesday, February 5.

During that morning, the school’s 5th and 6th Grade students attended an assembly when they viewed a performance from the Young Audiences of NJ called A Seat for Rosa.

“Told in song and story by two amazing performers, this play recounts the tale of Rosa Parks and the events that led to a revolution in racial justice,” said Hillside Principal Dr. Tali Axelrod.

According to Wikipedia, Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement, best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honored her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

“This production includes many songs from the Civil Rights era and brings this historical time to life. Through this exploration of the Civil Rights Era, students learn how individuals can work together to fight injustice,' Principal Axelrod explained.

“Students had many relevant and intelligent questions for the performers in the Q&A session following the performance,” she said.
